Tether Holdings SA, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT, has allocated nearly 5% of its $112 billion reserves to physical gold. Approximately 80 tonnes of the precious metal are stored in a high-security private vault in Switzerland, placing Tether among the top private gold holders globally—on par with institutions like UBS.

CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized the vault's unparalleled security and cost efficiency, noting that direct ownership eliminates third-party dependencies. The MOVE reflects a deliberate diversification strategy amid rising sovereign debt, with gold serving as a hedge against macroeconomic instability.

Regulatory scrutiny looms as the EU's MiCA framework and the US GENIUS Act may challenge gold's eligibility as a reserve asset. Tether's compliance efforts could face hurdles if it seeks formal stablecoin approval in Europe.
